An update on Nery, from his daughter Andrea

I'm writing here on his behalf because many of you know my dad through these pages, and you deserve to know what's happened.
On September 26, my dad was helping a friend mow his lawn, as he so often does for the people around him. While mowing, he and the lawnmower went over the edge of a cliff. He was rushed to the hospital, where he has been in the Intensive Care Unit ever since.
What happened to him
His injuries were extensive. He broke many of his ribs, which damaged his right lung and made it hard for him to breathe. He had internal bleeding from his liver that required emergency surgery. He also fractured vertebrae in his neck and lower back, and suffered head injuries, including severe concussions and two small areas of bleeding in the brain that the neurosurgery team is watching closely.
In the first days, the surgeons removed part of his right lung. He has been kept sedated and on a breathing machine so his body could rest and heal.
The past week
There have been hard days and good ones.
On Friday, October 2, he went through a long surgery to stabilize seven of his ribs. It went very well, and within a day the doctors could already see his breathing improving. There's been no sign of infection.
Over the weekend, the team began slowly lowering his sedation so he could wake up. On Sunday he had a brief moment of wakefulness and responded well.
On Monday, he became much less responsive, which was frightening. The doctors ran tests, and on Tuesday we got some answers: one of his kidneys had slowly stopped working after Friday's surgery, allowing toxins to build up in his body, which can affect the brain. This likely also explains the heavy swelling we'd been seeing. He has started dialysis, his sedation has been fully stopped, and we're waiting on one more scan to confirm this was the only cause.
We don't yet know how his mind has been affected or what his recovery will look like. The doctors have told us to expect confusion when he first wakes up, and we're preparing for a long road.
Being with him
I'm visiting every day. I hold his hand, talk to him, and read to him from the Bible, including many of the verses you've sent. I've also made a small photo album and put pictures of my dad on the wall beside his bed, so the nurses and doctors can get to know the man they're caring for.

For now, visits are limited to immediate family. I'll let everyone know when that changes.
What comes next
The hospital has been wonderful, and his care there is covered. But his doctor has been honest with us: when my dad leaves the hospital, he will need hands-on help with eating, medication, and daily care, likely for a long time. My brother Jonathan and I both live far away, so we are meeting with the hospital's social worker this week to understand the options.
How you can help
Many of you have asked what you can do. Here's what would mean the most:
Keep praying for him. We feel it, and we're grateful.
Give if you're able. Jonathan and I set up a GoFundMe so that the many generous offers we've received have one safe place to go. Every gift will go toward Dad's care after he leaves the hospital and the costs of keeping family at his side. https://gofund.me/0fa4cb1c5
I'll be posting daily updates and photos on the GoFundMe page, so that's the best place to follow along.
Thank you for loving my dad and for walking with us through this. It means more than I can say.
With gratitude,
Andrea

Andrea
